Dressing For Success: How do uniforms impact your employees?

Dressing For Success: How do uniforms impact your employees?

Posted by Noel Asmar on

What do your spa uniforms say about you? About your brand or organization? Are they empowering? Or are they an afterthought? Uniforms and employee dress codes can play a big role in hiring, employee retention, and satisfaction. We sat down with our founder and CEO, Noel Asmar, to talk more about what uniforms communicate, how to care for a caregiver, and the future of wellness.

Q: What are some of the benefits of a uniform program that people may overlook?
A:   Putting on a uniform is the first step in getting ready for work every day. It can be uplifting if the uniform is flattering and makes someone feel like part of a team they are proud of. Not only are they an essential part of branding, but they’re a way to unite and empower everyone. A staff member that looks great and feels good in their uniform brings that energy with them into every treatment or appointment and clients take notice. They are a vital recruitment and retention tool for spa directors. Investing in elegant, tailored styles empowers team members and communicates brand values to clients, setting the bar for a luxurious experience before a service or treatment even begins.

Q: What role do uniforms play in the hiring process?
A: If staff members are expected to go to work in a uniform that doesn’t feel great, directors and managers may not realize the negative impact it has on an employee. There’s been a staff shortage for years in these industries and now more than ever, the look and feel of a brand are really considered by potential employees. People are applying because they trust your brand. When you dress staff with a high level of respect and show them that art of care, employees positively respond to that.

Q: Noel Asmar Uniforms celebrated 20 years in business last year, along with the launch of Asmar Scrubs. How have you seen the health and wellness industry evolve in that time?
A: There’s been an increase in nurses and nurse practitioners moving into the spa industry as medispa services like injectables and IV treatments are usually administered by medically trained staff. There’s now a growing need for appropriate medical scrubs that differentiate medical practitioners from spa therapists and estheticians. There’s a renewed sense of the need for self-care and a high priority being put on both looking and feeling good. Wellness professionals have made it their job to care for others, and we’ve made it our job to care for the caregiver.

Q: We typically think of the client or patient’s experience when we talk about health and wellness. How has Noel Asmar Uniforms and Asmar Scrubs shifted focus to look at empowering and caring for the practitioner?
A: These professions—massage therapists, aestheticians, nurses, healthcare providers—are physically demanding. They’re standing and moving throughout their entire shift. We factor that into all of our designs and ensure everything is Made For the Way You Move. We’ve created a compression collection to provide support and soothe legs and feet. We utilize sustainable fabrics whenever possible and select materials with ample stretch and breathability for comfort. Even the color palettes we choose are designed to evoke a sense of calm for both the wearer and their client or patient.

Q: What can customers and clients expect to see from NAU and Asmar Scrubs in the future?
A: We’ve always been focused on inclusivity and we’re continuing to look for opportunities to expand on that. We launched petite joggers last year and we’ll be launching tall styles later this year, along with new colors in our scrubs collection. We’ve also launched base layers recently which are not only an easy way for someone to cover visible tattoos if they’re required to do so, but they allow practitioners like massage therapists to remove their tunic during a treatment. It’s a simple but elevated way to maintain the therapist’s identity and ensure they’re distinguishable within the spa team and as the spa environment evolves, it’s important everyone is distinguishable in their roles but easily identifiable and always empowered.

With the new styles and recent launches, NAU is able to dress your entire team from front desk and reception to the practitioners and treatment providers, making it even easier for spa, wellness, and medical professionals to dress for success each and every day.
